Children can be abandoned and left homeless. St John’s Youth Services is working to change the lives of these children and support their journey to independence. Cops for Kids has assisted in that effort with a $25,000 donation.
St John’s Youth Services provide accommodation for young people experiencing homelessness in their Youth110 (Adelaide) and Foyer (Port Adelaide) facilities. The St John’s Foyer Port Adelaide currently operates single rooms in shared accommodation blocks with care support workers on site. Residents are assisted in gaining education and employment while they learn the independent living skills they will require, with the support and understanding they need. As these skills develop, St John’s Youth Services seeks to transition the young people into private rental and independent living accommodation.
Cops for Kids has donated $25,000 to fund this transition program with St John’s. As part of the program, care workers assist the young people obtaining rental accommodation, purchase basic items required for independent living, and continue to manage their welfare over the next 12 months to aid their progression to self-reliance. Funds are not used to pay the rental accommodation.
This supported welfare approach has ensured the success of young people moving into independent living whilst providing guidance that many people receive from their family and friends.
